Why We Built Velat: A Next.js 16 Theme for AI Startups

The story behind Velat — a Next.js 16 theme built for AI startups who care about conversion, not decoration.

The Problem With Modern SaaS Websites

Walk through any AI startup website launched in the last two years and you'll notice a pattern. Purple gradients. Rounded cards. Glassmorphic blobs. Three-column feature grids with icons that all look the same. A hero section that promises to "revolutionize" something but never explains what the product actually does.

This isn't a design failure. It's a structure failure.

Most SaaS templates are built backward. Designers start with visual trends, then fit content into whatever space is left. The result is a site that looks modern but converts poorly — because nobody stopped to ask what a visitor actually needs to see, in what order, to move from curiosity to action.

We built Velat to fix that.

What Velat Is

Velat is a production-ready theme for AI startups and SaaS products. It's built on Next.js 16 with the App Router, Tailwind CSS, and Turbopack. Every page is statically generated. Every section is written in TypeScript.

It's not a template pack. It's a foundation.

The goal was simple: give founders and developers a starting point that already solves the hard problems — conversion structure, SEO, dark mode, content management — so they can focus on their product instead of their landing page.

The Structure First Approach

Every page in Velat is arranged to move a visitor toward action. Not because we read a marketing book, but because we tested the order.

The home page follows this sequence:

  • ―Hero — headline, value proposition, two calls to action, product preview
  • ―Logo cloud — social proof from recognizable brands
  • ―Bento grid — what the product does, in scannable cards
  • ―Proof metrics — numbers that build credibility
  • ―Pricing teaser — the offer, made clear

This order isn't arbitrary. It mirrors how visitors actually read a landing page: headline first, then trust signals, then details, then price. Skip any of these and conversion drops.

Most templates force you to figure this out yourself. Velat gives you the sequence already built.

Built With Next.js 16

Next.js 16 is a significant jump. Turbopack is now the default bundler. App Router is stable. Server Components are the norm. Route params are async.

Velat takes full advantage of all of it.

Every page uses Server Components by default. Client Components are used only where interactivity requires them — search inputs, filter buttons, theme toggles. This keeps the JavaScript bundle small and the initial page load fast.

Static generation is used for every route that doesn't need per-request data. That includes all blog posts, all product pages, and all documentation pages. The result is a site that loads in under a second on most connections.

The build output confirms it. Twenty-eight pre-rendered pages. Zero dynamic routes. No cold starts.

Content Lives in JSON and Markdown

One of the biggest complaints about templates is that changing a single word requires editing code. We fixed that.

In Velat, every piece of text lives in a JSON or Markdown file inside the data/ folder. Site name, navbar links, footer columns, hero copy, pricing text — all of it. You change the text, the site updates.

Blog posts and product pages are written in Markdown. Each one is a single .md file with frontmatter at the top. Add a file, get a page. Delete a file, the page disappears.

This approach has two benefits. Non-developers can update the site without touching code. Developers can extend the system without breaking content.

Why AI Startups Specifically

We chose AI startups as the target audience because that's where the problem is worst.

AI companies ship fast. They iterate weekly. They don't have time to design a landing page from scratch. But they also can't afford to look generic — the AI space is crowded, and visual identity matters.

Velat gives them a starting point that looks premium, converts well, and can be customized in hours instead of weeks. The theme is opinionated enough to be useful and flexible enough to be adapted.

What We Didn't Include

We deliberately left some things out.

No database. No authentication. No payment integration. No admin panel.

These features are common in SaaS boilerplates, but they're also highly specific to each project. Shipping them pre-built would mean forcing a stack choice on buyers. Instead, we focused on the landing page layer — the part every AI startup needs and most get wrong.

If you need auth or payments, you can add them. The codebase is clean, typed, and documented.

The Anti-Template Philosophy

Velat isn't anti-template in the sense that it avoids being a template. It's anti-template in the sense that it avoids the sameness that templates usually produce.

Every design decision was made for a reason. The typography is editorial, not startup-generic. The colors are restrained. The spacing is deliberate. The result is a site that looks like it was designed by a person, not generated by a tool.

This matters for conversion. Visitors trust sites that look considered. They distrust sites that look assembled from parts.

What's Next

Velat is version 1.0. The foundation is solid, but there's more to come.

Planned updates include additional page templates, more component variations, integration guides for popular tools, and expanded documentation. Buyers get all updates for free.

If you're building an AI startup and you need a landing page that actually converts, Velat is for you. Buy once, use on unlimited client projects.
